In Sister Bay, as an STR owner, you are required to submit a DATCP inspection report along with numerous other items when applying for your annual STR license. Sister Bay is requiring a new inspection every three years. Per DATCP, they do not have the capacity right now (statewide) to do DATCP reinspections every three years as Sister Bay is requiring for STR applications/licenses.
To learn more about this challenge, Home Hosts member, Karen Berndt, contacted Heidi Teich, Village Clerk of Sister Bay, and here are her notes on the conversation:
The current Sister Bay STR licenses expire on June 30, 2024. Per Heidi, Sister Bay has not sent out a new application and they plan to have the application process completely online — actual date for new website launch is unknown. She told me that the application process opens up on March 1 and applications will need to be in place at least 45 days prior to expiration of current license.
Heidi also reviewed the STR ordinance — particularly the paragraph that describes what inspections must be done for the application to be approved. The Sister Bay ordinance is below and you will find the inspection requirement on pages 3 and 4. If it has been over 3 years since the last health department inspection, STR owners will need to contract with a licensed home inspection service as defined in the ordinance.
Please recall, if you do not renew your license in time, your application could be considered a “new” license and delay the issuance of your license and your ability to rent. Be sure to allow enough lead time to address any issues that may come up in your inspection and to get the paperwork after your inspection since it needs to be filed with your application 45 days prior to expiration of your current license.
