Meeting this week: June 27, 2pm
One major consideration is to restrict new licenses in residential areas but there are commission members who feel minimum night restrictions would be good for ALL STRs. It’s important for you to speak out about the value of STRs to visitors and the tourism economy in Egg Harbor, how much we care about the Village of Egg Harbor and Door County overall, to dispel the stereotypes to the contrary. We’ve laid out these points in a packet prepared for the plan commission that was reviewed at the last meeting. You can use this for talking points when you write commission members or attend the meetings.
This is the time for you to get involved.
We need owners to get involved. Please contact Michael Servais if you are willing to serve on this team. There are many ways you can be involved from behind the scenes work to attending meetings. Once you contact Michael, you can decide what role is the best fit for you. If you don’t get involved, there will not be people at the meetings except residents who hope to severely restrict STRs.
The Plan Commission meets this Tuesday at 2pm. Here is the agenda and zoom link. Anyone who is able to attend in person, please do. That lets the plan commission know STR owners are active and involved.
There has been a lot of misinformation and misunderstanding about STRs. One key area of misinformation is the growth of STRs. Here are some highlights from the packet referenced above:
The key takeaways from STR growth data from DCTZC* are:
- Total listings have only grown from 2018 (79) to 2023 (93). A total of 14 listings over 5 years or an annual average growth rate of 3.5%
- Growth from ’21 to ’22 is 4.4%; growth from ’22 to ’23 is a negative -2.1%
- These DCTZC unit listings numbers are net numbers: net total # of homes/condos = baseline STRs plus new listings minus listings that stopped renting. There are many discontinued rentals every year but we often only hear about the new rentals. We believe this is what has led to misperceptions in the rate of STR overall growth.
This is an important change in perception of how fast STRs are growing and could influence the plan commission’s actions related to whether there is a “fire” that requires severe action or a trend we may wish to slow, but doesn’t need drastic actions with considerable consequences.
